Why I do This

My Leadership Journey Started on the Manufacturing Floor

I didn't begin my career with a college degree or a management title.

I began as a high school graduate, trying to build a career while supporting a young family. My first opportunity came at an automotive supplier serving Toyota, where I was introduced to a way of thinking that would shape the rest of my career.

Early on, I was given a Japanese mentor who believed that continuous improvement wasn't about massive changes it was about making small, meaningful improvements every day. More importantly, he believed in developing people.

My first project was to solve a quality issue involving missing components. Rather than telling me exactly how to fix it, he gave me a clear objective and trusted me to find the solution. I designed a simple poka-yoke device that counted the components and signaled when every part was present before the product moved on.

Looking back, the project itself wasn't what changed my career.

The leadership did.

My mentor connected the company's vision, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement in a way I had never experienced. He didn't micromanage. He provided clarity, trusted me with responsibility, and coached me through the process. He showed me that great leaders don't create followers they create confident problem solvers.

That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career.
